Battle Honours

The following are transcribed from the book: Battle honours of the British Empire and Commonwealth Land Forces, 1662-1991, by Alexander Rodger.

In the source, each battle honour is associated with qualifying dates and a military campaign or operation. Here, the battle honours are grouped under the campaign heading, and dates given are the earliest and latest dates from the relevant honours. The names of the battle honours are exactly as expressed in the source. The intention is to create an authoritative list for reference.

Notes

The identity of a battle honour is its name. The same battle honour may be associated with more than one campaign. For example, GAZA is associated with both The First Offensive and The Second Offensive in Palestine in WW1.

What is essentially the same battle honour might appear twice with slightly different spellings. For example, MAGDHABA-RAFAH and MAGHDABA-RAFAH. This happens when committees assess the same action a few years apart, and use different spellings when they allocate the battle honour in their conclusions. If the identity is the name, then these must be considered as different battle honours (though for the same battle). The exact spelling indexes information in the source (not transcribed) about when the battle honour was assessed and which units received the award.
